It seems that Bob Leif's message regarding FCS3.0 has generated some interest
in the new standard. As the chairman of the FCS3.0 committee let me use this
forum to update the flow community on the status of the new standard.

This committee of ISAC was formed about 20 months ago to update the
current FCS2.0 file standard. The complete membership of this committee is
listed on the ISAC home-page. The FCS standard is the definition
of the recommended format in which flow cytometers store data, either
listmode or histogram.

Changes in the state-of-the-art in instrumentation and compution has made
an update necessary. Briefly, the new standard will allow acquisition of
very large files ( <99,999,999 bytes), allow the inclusion of
international text characters, provide a mechanism for verification of
file integrity, require more information about how the signals were
amplified, provide KEYWORD support for cluster analysis and TIME acquisition.

The committee has nearly completed work on the new standard. When it has
been completed (we are working with an August 1 deadline), the standard
will be available on the ISAC and John Wiley home pages as well as in
other publications.

Any questions regarding the new standard can be addressed to me:
