RE: upgrade to quad 650's

When faced with the decision, I could not justify the many thousands of
$$ it takes to upgrade the FACStation via BD. It seems like an expensive
proposition and potentially time consuming proposition, even if you try
to do it on your own.

The next question is "why do you need to upgrade the Quadra 650
component of the FACStation"? An alternative is to continue to acquire
data on the Quadra, as it seems to be fine at that. Analysis of large
data files (1-4 MB) is where the Quadra gets bogged down. For that we
are buying the new Cellquest 3.0 (PPC native) and a Power Computing Mac
Clone. They have just released a new series using the 604e processor,
the Power Tower Pros, which are vastly cheaper than Apple's. The
PowerTowerPro 180 has a clock speed of 180MHz, 16 MB RAM, 2 GB HD, 8x
CD-ROM, 1 MB level 2 cache, video card, etc. for $4,200. You can add an
additional 32 MB of RAM for about $300, a 17" monitor for $1,000. At
present, the fastest Apple is the 9500/150, which is $1,000 more
expensive and significantly slower.

Now you have a free standing analysis station. One user can acquire
while another is doing analysis. All for a fraction of the price of
upgrading the Quadra 650 via BD and without the headache of trying to do
it on your own.

P.S. My (limited) understanding is that there is propritary hardware
required for the 650 to PPC FACStation upgrade. If so, my guess is that
BD will not give it away for a song.
