Two things...first, an UNUSED laser actually goes bad quicker than one
that is regularly fired up. It's therefore good practice to start and
lase a tube weekly rather than not. Second, your I-70 is still quite
valuable...what goes on a laser is the tube, essentially (although the
plumbing can also decay with disuse) -- so, it may simply be a case of
replacing the tube. Everything else -- head, magnet, power supply -- is
still usable. It means the difference between a new laser (~$20-30K) and
refitting the old one (~$7-10K). Also -- you can have your old tube
rebuilt for a considerably reduced cost (~$3-5K).
